Quel est le domaine de collaboration et de recherche de GlobalMed ?
Le but du réseau est l’échange et la confrontation de points de vue sur différentes manières de définir la Méditerranée dans le monde. La réunion de partenaires situés sur tous les continents permet un réel travail de réflexion sur ce qu’est la Méditerranée d’un point de vue géographique et sur ce que représente la Méditerranée d’un point de vue disciplinaire et culturel lorsqu’on l’étudie à plusieurs milliers de kilomètres de distance ou depuis ses rivages. Quelles sont ses limites, ses fractures, les concepts mobilisés pour la définir, dans quelles limites spatiales, chronologiques etc. ? Il est d’autant plus nécessaire d’effectuer cet échange que rien n’est moins « naturel » ou plus construit que l’espace méditerranéen.
En effet, s’il est presque inévitable d’échapper à l’idée de la Méditerranée comme bassin tant sont prépondérantes l’histoire du « berceau ou carrefour des civilisations » ainsi que l’influence d’une cartographie ayant joué un rôle majeur dans l’avènement de ce modèle, cette idée a pourtant le défaut d’éclipser voire d’obérer l’analyse de la Méditerranée dans le contexte de mondialisation. Or, les connexions, échanges, contacts entre l’espace méditerranéen et les zones atlantiques, africaines, asiatiques ou moyen-orientales sont innombrables et s’inscrivent dans la très longue durée.
Cette ambition de changement d’échelle et de perspective amène bien sûr à relativiser le « modèle méditerranéen » ou la singularité de cet espace, non sans les réduire à néant mais en les mettant à l’épreuve de la comparaison. Existe-t-il d’autres espaces dans le monde qui jouent un tel rôle de carrefour et de contact des peuples et des cultures ? Si oui leur histoire, leur configuration spatiale, leur organisation sociale, anthropologique, économique, fait-elle écho à celle de la Méditerranée ? Y retrouve-t-on aussi des fractures, des routes privilégiées, des espaces profondément cosmopolites et interculturels ?
Trois axes de recherche sont explorés :

- Les connexions (géographiques et humaines) de ou vers la Méditerranée
- La Méditerranée comme point de comparaison avec d’autres espaces dans le monde.
What is the Research and Collaboration Scope of GlobalMed?
The aim of GlobalMed is to exchange and compare viewpoints on different ways of defining the Mediterranean in the world. The collaboration between partners located on all continents allows for extensive reflection on what the Mediterranean represents from a geographical point of view and from a disciplinary and cultural point of view whether observed from several thousands of kilometers away or from its shores. What are its limits, its fractures and the concepts used to define it, and within what spatial, chronological or other limits? It is all the more necessary to carry out these exchanges since nothing is less “natural” and rather more constructed than the Mediterranean area concept.
Indeed, if escaping the idea of the Mediterranean as a basin is almost inevitable, so preponderant is the narrative of the « cradle » or « crossroads of civilizations » and the influence of cartography’s major role in the advent of this model, that this idea risks the fault of eclipsing or even obtruding the analysis of the Mediterranean in the context of globalization. However, the connections, exchanges and contacts between the Mediterranean area and the Atlantic, African, Asian or Middle Eastern zones are innumerable and take place over the very long term.
This alteration in scale and perspective ultimately leads to putting the “Mediterranean model” and the singularity of this space into perspective, and it does so by putting them to the test of comparison. Are there other spaces in the world that play such a crossroads and contact point role between peoples and cultures? If so, does their history, their spatial configuration, their social, anthropological and economic organization echo that of the Mediterranean? Do they also display fractures, primary routes, deeply cosmopolitan and intercultural spaces?
